What is neuromuscular dentistry?

Neuromuscular dentistry is one of Dr. Jeffrey Lopes’s areas of focus. This area of dentistry embodies accepted scientific principles of patho-physiology, anatomy, form, and function. We strive to understand the relationships between the teeth, temporomandibular joints (TMJ or jaw joint), and masticatory (chewing) muscles in order to help you achieve a bite (occlusion) based on the optimal relationship between the jaw and the skull. Through neuromuscular dentistry, Dr. Jeffrey Lopes strives to help you achieve a more correct bite that relieves pain and headaches and allows your smile and jaw to function at the highest possible level.

What is TMJ?

TMJ is a commonly used acronym that stands for the temporomandibular joint, or the jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the rest of the head, and when it is stressed, injured, or misaligned, it can cause a significant amount of discomfort and pain. You may experience TMJ disorder, or TMD, due to factors such as trauma, arthritis in the TMJ, stress, or bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching). Many TMJ problems result from problems with the occlusion, or how the muscles, joints, and teeth work together.
