What is a crown?
A crown, sometimes called a cap, is a versatile dental restoration used to restore a tooth to its original shape, size, and appearance. Dental crowns can be used for both restorative and cosmetic purposes, and each crown is custom made to fit your tooth and enhance your smile. The crown entirely covers the tooth, starting at the gums, to improve its health, function, and beauty. While dental crowns can be made from a number of materials, we most often provide our patients with porcelain crowns, which are favored for their durable, natural-looking properties.
Do I need a crown?
Dr. Jeffrey Lopes may recommend a crown to improve your smile by:
- Restoring a seriously damaged or decayed tooth
- Strengthening a weakened or fractured tooth
- Supporting a large filling when little natural tooth structure remains
- Enhancing the appearance of a tooth that is irregularly shaped or severely stained
- Attaching a bridge
- Covering and completing a dental implant
What is the process for receiving a dental crown?
Once our talented dentist has determined that a dental crown in Sonoma, California, is the right option for improving your smile, we will prepare the tooth by removing a layer of tooth enamel, allowing your tooth to accommodate the thickness of the crown without appearing too bulky. We then take impressions of your smile, which are sent to a dental laboratory; while your permanent crown is made at the dental lab, we place a temporary crown on the tooth. After the permanent dental crown is sent to our office, we will check its fit and appearance before cementing it in place in your smile. Crowns provide lasting, effective restorations.
