What is a bridge?
A dental bridge is one of the options we offer for replacing missing or lost teeth. A bridge is a fixed (non-removable) dental restoration that is anchored to the neighboring healthy teeth for stability and security. Each dental bridge is custom made to fit your smile comfortably and to mimic the look and feel of your natural teeth.
What are the types of dental bridges?
There are three main types of dental bridges.
- Traditional fixed bridge – This type of bridge is used when two healthy teeth or dental implants are in place next to the gap left by the missing tooth.
- Resin bonded bridge – This kind of bridge may be recommended for the front teeth. A resin bonded bridge is attached to the nearby healthy teeth with metal bands.
- Cantilever bridge – This type of dental bridge is used when only one side of the gap is neighbored by a natural tooth.
To place a traditional fixed bridge, which is the most common type, your experienced dentist will place two dental crowns on the natural teeth adjacent to the gap. These teeth, called abutment teeth, support the pontic (artificial replacement tooth).
Do I need a bridge?
If you are missing one tooth or a few teeth in a row, Dr. Jeffrey Lopes may recommend a dental bridge in Sonoma, California. Bridges are good options for replacing missing teeth because they look natural, are very stable, and help to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of position.
